I am so happy to share Glennon Doyle Melton’s article, One Teacher’s Brilliant Strategy to Stop Future School Shootings-and It’s Not About Guns. Melton writes of the innovative way her son’s teacher identifies and helps students who might be feeling isolated because they are not connecting with their classmates. Unfortunately these feelings are common, especially amongst young children when they find themselves in a new setting with people they might not know very well or at all. I too know what it is like to be lonely as well as the difficulty in initiating a conversation to overcome that loneliness. This is why I created Question Connection. It was my way of helping start conversations, which would create mutual understanding and develop meaningful relationships. If we are going to build communities of acceptance, empathy, and tolerance, we must learn not only how to talk, but perhaps more importantly, how to listen. I am so happy that more and more people are recognizing the important role communication plays in facilitating inclusion. People really do need to feel as if they have someone in their corner, someone that they can call a friend. Helping kids talk to one another is a first step in helping them become kinder and more accepting individuals. Thanks to Ms. Doyle Melton and her son’s teacher, we can take comfort in the fact that there are a lot of caring people in the world who are willing to use new approaches in order to make young people feel as if they are not alone. You never know where a brief exchange or sweet smile may lead…. perhaps it will be the start to a beautiful new friendship.
Please feel free to reach out to me. I would love to learn more about how you facilitate meaningful conversations and help others feel included!
